It will grow on you! February 4, 2010 S. Clements (Wellington, New Zealand) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's different, and a little less accessible than The Trials of Van Occupanter, but it is a superb album. For Midlake fans, it just needs a good half a dozen listens and you will love it, trust me! If you are not a Midlake fan I suggest buying The Trials of Van Occupanter, and once you love that - buy this!
Perfectly fine February 3, 2010 Marley's Ghost (Stafford, UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Van Occupanther may well not be the greatest album of the last decade but it's one that I love very dearly. Its just a joy to listen to. A "stayer" on the ipod.
I was looking forward to the new one and have to admit to being disappointed on first listen. I do understand the "samey" criticisms but on perseverence (and lets face it all the best albums need a little effort) that isn't a problem in the long term. Neither do I agree with the Uncut reviewer who found it cold. Yes it is cold but not in the sense that he inferred. It's an album about loss and the end of things. At times very beautiful but melancholic. It lacks the strong melodys of the last album but there is more subtlety so requires more from the listener.
Downsides:
1) English Folk has, at heart, the concept of death and renewal as encapsulated in the face of the Green Man. I'm not sure if Midlake have yet grasped this idea. Musically its fine but it has only half the story.
2) Many of the tracks are crying out for a counterpoint to Smith's voice. They should recruit a female singer.
PS. Amazing how many "promo" copies are knocking about. I hope that those who reviewed this before 1st Feb put their hands in their pockets eventually. It's bands like this we should cherish and support or all we'll be left with is the massed ranks of turgid homogenous Simoncowlerry.
Incredible album February 2, 2010 Mr. C. R. Homer 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the first album I have bought by Midlake and I cannot stop listening to it. It's an incerible album, the sound draws you in and the songs are beautiful. How anyone could say this is boring I don't understand. It's so good i've just bought it on vinyl as well as the cd.
it took a couple of listens February 2, 2010 Ben Grimm76 (Lincs, Uk) Got to admit wasn't overly struck on first listen but it certainly grew on me after listening to it a few more times. I like it very much, especially Children of the gounds. just like Banman and Occupanther were different from each other, this is the same. I read that the band threw away a truck load of songs before coming up with this, I'd love to hear those! Fan's of Midlake will like, as for newcomers, I'm not sure. I hope so.
The courage of Midlake to produce this gentle masterpiece... February 2, 2010 Mr. Adrian D. Pulford (Northampton, UK) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
As an absolute Midlake fan I have seen them live three times. At the Rescue Rooms, Nottingham in 2006 and at the Festival Hall in 2007 and most recently last week in Southend-on-Sea where Tim Smith humbly thanked the audience for listening to the two new numbers they opened with - we were priviliged to be there! I had ordered 'The Courage of Others' from Amazon on vinyl but could not resist buying the CD at the gig to listen to on the 2 hour drive home. It has not been out of the car since and I have probably listened to it 20 times. This morning when 'Bring Down' came on in the car I said to myself out loud "this could be the best album I've ever heard". I am 57 years old and have been listening to music every day of my life since I heard 'Hats Off To Larry' by Del Shannon when I was eight. Midlake seem to embody everything that is pure about the love of music. I love their vision, their ability to lead rather than follow and their on-stage unity has to be experienced to be believed. I am going to see them again at Birmingham Town Hall on 16th February - I can't wait. To all those who think thier new album is 'samey' I suggest you haven't listened to it enough. I know life is better with albums like this around.
