5 out of 5 stars Give it time   April 16, 2010
Mr. S. Hooper (Oxford UK)
Please give this time. I was not sure on first listen but over time it has grown on me to become at least the equal of Van Occupanther.

5 out of 5 stars Best Yet   April 11, 2010
Twippy (Lincs, England)
Like many others I wasn't blown away on my initial listen and though, after about 10 plays, it had grown to be a really good album I still preferred 'Trials of....then something magical happened. The subtleties and nuances hidden in the tracks revealed themselves in all there majestic glory and now I can hardly go a day without listening to it.
Only really great albums take you to another level just when you think you've drained vereything out of them. Perservere, and you might, like me, think this one of the best records of the last 20 years. It's worth it.

2 out of 5 stars Massively disappointing   April 6, 2010

Having totally loved Van Occupanther this comes as such a disappointment. I have no idea if this album sounds like Fairport Convention, Jethro Tull, Pentangle, Camel, BJH or whoever, because I have absolutely no interest in those bands. If indeed, this is typical of those bands, now I know why. There are no discernible tunes, no melodies, nothing stands out at all. Yes, you cannot fault the musicianship but that alone does not make a good album. I have listened to this sporadically for 2 months, desperate to give it a chance, but I just cannot get into it at all. Buy Bamnam and Slivercork, buy the Trials of...but avoid this like the plague. This is the review that I didn't want to write, but it just doesn't work for me. 2 stars is being very generous by the way...

5 out of 5 stars Something quite special   April 1, 2010

I don't pretend to know much about the nuances of music but I do think this is a masterful piece of work and easily the best album so far in 2010.

Much of the lyrics of the album are obviously inspired by nature and it's beauty, but the whole experience of the album feels like it's flowing through each of the 4 seasons and is the perfect example of an album that is more wonderful as a whole than the sum of it's parts. Some will argue there a few weaker songs especially towards the end of the record but as I say you can't pick out individual songs for criticism, in my opinion.
On the surface it is quite similar to their previous effort (The Trials of Van Occupanther, also a stunning LP), after a few songs you notice the more English folk style of Courage, with more use of acoustic guitar and flutes, compared to Trails, with its use of electric guitars and keyboards and it's more 70's feel, and it is really a completely different experience. And it's made even more visceral by the more gravely and almost world-weary vocals of Tim Smith.

I urge people to give this a chance and just let it wash over you and it won't disappoint. There are so many moments which will give you goosebumps, no more than the opening to the chorus of Core of Nature - 'Into the core of nature/No earthly mind can enter' which is a line from a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Magnificent.
